A -Z Blogging Challenge: 04.04.2026

Friends, I tell you, I just keep pushing the envelope with this A - Z daily blogging challenge business.  It is now after 8:30 pm on 04.04.2026 and I have yet to write my post for today.  So, this is going to be the fastest one yet!!

When we left off yesterday, I shared glimmers that begin with the letter C.  Mainly, clouds. Before that we had B for butterflies and we started with A for awake.  Kind of random but today's glimmer is probably the most random yet.

D is for Doughnuts

Granted doughnuts are not exactly little miracles.  But glimmers can be little blessings and doughnuts are definitely that.  Doughnuts are like little, round edible celebrations.  In recent years, they have evolved from the simple but ever popular glazed yeast doughnut to made-to-order, designer pastries.

One of my granddaughters, Cadence, doesn't like cake so she has doughnuts on her birthday.  I used to buy doughnuts for the teachers to have with coffee in my school library.  And Lucia and Cami love to stop at our corner Dunkin for doughnuts when they come over.

It seems that there are 2 different camps where doughnuts are involved.  The folks that prefer Krispy Kreme Doughnuts and the folks that prefer Dunkin Donuts.  Even the spelling of the word doughnut is different depending on which restaurant you are patronizing.  And now, there are designer bakeries like Dapper Doughnuts, Humble Donut and The Glazy Donut, with their own spelling preferences.  Doughnuts have become little celebrations!!

These are the doughnuts our neighborhood Dunkin was offering today.

Here is a display of pan dulce at the Estrella Market up the street.

Some Humble Donuts.

A Splurge in More Ways than One

We don't have doughnuts very often.  Do you?  My favorite toasted coconut Dunkin Donut is a whopping 21 Weight Watchers points.  Which is just 2 points shy of my daily allotted points.  So on the rare days I do indulge in doughnuts, I have a decision to make.  Do I not eat another thing the rest of the day?  Or do I eat all I want of everything the rest of the day because I've already blown it at breakfast?

Here in El Paso, many folks prefer pan dulce or sweet bread to doughnuts.  I love a good sweet bread as much as a doughnut and have never been known to turn down either one.  For New Year's, the El Paso community enjoys pan de reyes magos or bread of the Three Kings.  I can eat my weight in that, too.

Below is a photo of pan de reyes mago or rosca de reyes.  A little baby is baked inside the bread and whoever gets the baby in their slice has to host a New Year's Eve party the following year.

Not only are doughnuts high in points but they are high in price!  Of course, what isn't these days?  A dozen Dunkin Donuts runs between $12-$15.  A dozen Krispy Kreme Doughnuts runs between $15-$20.  More than a dollar a doughnut.  And I imagine the designer doughnuts are even more expensive.

So that makes them even more of a treat as we can't afford to eat them often for more reasons than one.

But they are delicious and fun and make me smile.  Just like clouds and butterflies.  At least until I try to zip my jeans.

Your Turn

Are doughnuts a special treat for you?  Do you ever make them at home?  I remember my maternal grandmother made doughnuts for us.  I think I have her doughnut cutter.  Maybe I should make some doughnut making memories with my grandbabies.

Off to bed.  Good night nurse, I have got to get ahead a little on these posts or this is going to be a month of late nights!!

Thank you for visiting.  Happy Easter.

Hugs and kisses,

  1. I signed up to make donuts in 7th grade for a Revolutionary War group project. Naturally my mother had to do most of the work because she didn’t want us near the hot oil. They were terrible! LOL! Two hungry boys ate a lot of them regardless.

I do like donuts but not the fancy ones. I prefer a glazed old fashioned or a coconut (not toasted) cake donut. DD used to have cinnamon ones I loved too. Maybe they still do… I rarely get them now…
